The fight for Sense8 isn’t over.

Here’s the thing. Part of me is extremely pleased with the “finale”. I am so proud of the work we did in not settling for cliffhangers and a total cancellation of Sense8. We got our finale, it was dramatic, action-packed, funny, touching, intense, and so beautiful. And if that is the end of Sense8, I am pleased with it and I believe many fans are too.

But there is another part of me that doesn’t want to settle.

I realize we accomplished such a feat in getting this 2hr “finale”. Major plot lines were tied up nicely and our sensates looked happy. So why do we need to fight for more?

Let’s explore a few points. I ultimately want to emphasize that we don’t need to settle for this as the ending.

  1. The show was intended to have a longer run. Lana has said she’s written the 3rd season. The plot lines and character arcs were not designed to end after just two seasons and a 2hr “finale”. That isn’t what Lana has in mind, so why will we settle for that? I know we feel a connection and a love to this show so it doesn’t make sense for us to simply accept this as the “finale” to the stories we care about so deeply.
  2. The characters deserve further, complete development and a more wholistic conclusion. The “finale” did what it could with the time it had, but let’s face it. It didn’t cover everything. We missed development of many of the characters’ stories and relationships. What about Capheus’ election? Where will Kala/Rajan/Wolfgang’s relationship go? Lito’s career? Sun’s figuring out what to do about Joon gi’s? Just to name a few!
  3. The finale condensed 1, maybe even 2 or 3 seasons into a 2.5hr timeframe. That’s almost incomprehensible. So it would make sense then, why the pace was rapid, character developments (ie Rajan) were drastic, and even significant, central aspects of the plot (ie the Lacuna and the Mother) were introduced and barely explored. All while trying to tie up plot lines while they are all in one location, which inhibits some story lines in the process. It was just a drastic feat to try to compress the story into the time it did while still making sense and delivering a remarkable piece of work. Why then, should we settle? When clearly this isn’t the ideal, fully developed, fleshed out ending any of us would have wanted? We don’t have to settle if we realize that we have fought for this show once and we can do it again if it’s what we all want.
  4. The show is incredibly powerful. It has garnered a global fan base united in love unlike anything I’ve ever witness. It promotes themes of unity and kindness, of the human experience, of love in all forms, sexualities, and ways. It has brought people together and promoted messages that inspire hope in the future and potential of a united human kind. It has explored representation of different people, different communities. It has impacted, inspired, and involved thousands and thousands of audiences across the world. The love that this show promotes is powerful. It has the capability of reminding the world that there is still beauty here on earth. There still is good in humanity and we are all worth loving.
  5. This doesn’t have to be the end. Lana hasn’t given up. But she knows that the real guiding force that can help in making a difference is us. If we can make our voices heard again, if we raise enough commotion again, not settling for this 2hr “finale” as the end of these stories we love, we can make a change. Netflix did it once. They can do it again. I am so gratefulness got a “finale” but I have so much hope in the chance of us getting more than this end.

This doesn’t have to be the end.

I believe in this show and the love that radiates from it. Sense8 hasn’t ended. Not if we have any part in it. We’ve done it once. We can do it again. We can see our Sensates once again, living, loving, and lighting the world with their love. Such an impossibility is only a kiss away from reality.
